The IELTS scoring system is designed to accurately measure your English language proficiency. For Pakistani students and professionals, understanding how IELTS bands are calculated and the minimum requirements for different countries can help set realistic goals and improve results.

How IELTS is scored

IELTS uses a 9-band scale, where each band corresponds to a specific level of English proficiency.

Band Scale Overview

  • Band 9 – Expert user
  • Band 8 – Very good user
  • Band 7 – Good user
  • Band 6 – Competent user
  • Band 5 – Modest user
  • Band 4 – Limited user
  • Band 3 and below – Extremely limited or non-user

Section-wise Scoring

Each module — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — is scored individually.
Your overall band score is the average of these four module scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5.

Listening and Reading

  • Contain 40 questions.
  • Each correct answer = 1 mark.
  • Marks are converted into a band score using an official conversion table.

Writing

  • Assessed on four criteria: Task Achievement, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy.

Speaking

  • Assessed on: Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, and Pronunciation.

Minimum Score Tips

  • Research Requirements – Universities and immigration bodies have different score thresholds.
  • Aim Higher than the Minimum – A higher score increases your admission and visa approval chances.
  • Focus on Weak Areas – If your writing score lags behind, dedicate extra practice to it.

Improving Your Band Score

  • Practice timed mock tests.
  • Get feedback from IELTS trainers.
  • Read English newspapers and academic articles daily.
  • Record your speaking practice for self-evaluation.
